White Knots on the Red Carpet and how to get yours!
I have to admit first, that I’m generally not a fan of ribbons. My opposition position to ribbon wearing grew due to the AIDS epidemic as I saw people who would eagerly wear a red ribbon at a benefit, but would do little else in the fight against AIDS. As if by putting on a ribbon they had done their part.
The story of the red ribbon is an amazing one of activism growing from creativity. And then the commodification of that power so that the power was lost from the action. But really, that is another blog post for world AIDS day or something.
There is no doubt however, that the ribbon has become more than that, and continues to be a way for someone to quietly voice their feeling about something, and there is such a ribbon for the issue of Marriage Equality- the white knot. As much as I have this personal problem with ribbons, I think I’ll put that aside for a white knot. Â The article linked tells you how to get one and talks about who may wear one at the Oscars.
