Why Fundamentalists Can’t Accept Same-Sex Marriage

I happened to check out a far right Christian blog today, and it illustrates so well why the most fundamentalist Christians can’t accept same-sex marriage. It really isn’t that for 2 guys or 2 girls to marry would impact their life directly. But it it would totally shatter the structure upon which their faith is built.

Let me state the obvious: Jesus is the Bridegroom and we His people are His bride,

We have been purchased by His blood

This male/female marriage paradigm is central, and for many unquestionable. Now, from my perspective, there are other ways of understanding the relationship between Jesus and the Church (his people). But if we fail to understand this we will only keep talking past each other. I believe it is one reason why the word Marriage is such a touchstone! If we didn’t call gay marriage, “marriage,” who knows if it would find more acceptance.

Now, I’m not advocating for that. Only advocating that the more we grasp why the other side sees things as they do, the easier it will be to keep gaining ground towards equal rights
