Lynn, Zeitlin, Executive Director of Equality Advocates Pennsylvania Steps Down

Lynn, Zeitlin, Executive Director of Equality Advocates Pennsylvania

Steps Down

Philadelphia, PA - Equality Advocates Pennsylvania and Equality Pennsylvania announce the resignation of Executive Director, Lynn G. Zeitlin. Zeitlin has been in the position for slightly less than one year and is leaving to pursue other interests.

“It has been a privilege and a challenge to lead Equality Advocates Pennsylvania through a period of great transition in a difficult economic climate for all non profits,” said Zeitlin. “I am particularly proud of the creation of a truly statewide board, the formation of Equality Pennsylvania, and the relocation of the legal services to Mazzoni Center where I know LGBT clients will continue to be well served.  I will continue to support the work of this vital organization.”

Board President Brian Sims said, “There is no question that Lynn stepped into her position at Equality Advocates Pennsylvania at a time when the organization needed leadership and restructuring. Her accomplishments over the last year have been a huge step forward for this organization and for LGBT Pennsylvanians and she certainly leaves Equality Pennsylvania in a better position than she found it.”

Equality Advocates Pennsylvania is the Commonwealth’s leading advocacy organization, dedicated to achieving equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Pennsylvanians.

How dismaying that they have to “find” board members. For a statewide organization to lack a significant base of support in the second largest region of the state is very sad. I recently attended an event that promoted EA PA as a beneficiary for a regional fundraiser focused on advocacy. I was hesitant, but this news compounds my resistance to that investment of local resources.

It is 2010 and far, far too late to applaud politicians and organizations who should have been at the LGBTQ Western PA table years ago. Yes, we must celebrate our new relationships, but we should also hold our natural allies responsible for their leadership failure. EA PA “finding” board members from Western PA in the year 2010 is akin to Dan Onorato “finding” domestic partner benefits during his primary campaign months. Bullshit.

The retort from the gay Onorato apologists is that a Jack Wagnerian governor's race is a far worse fate. With regard to organizations, there are plenty of groups that are working across the state who deserve our support — namely, the Women's Law Project and the ACLU. Maybe Pennsylania's LGBTQ community just isn't where it needs to be to fund a statewide advocacy group so partnering with a larger organization makes sense?

At this time, there is no Western PA involvement except through the Value All Families Coalition. In the week prior to this press release, three of the seven board members resigned, leaving a board of four who are in Philadelphia area, Bloomsburg area, and Scranton area. I believe they are about to bring 3- 5 board members on who are all from the Harriburg/central PA region. I believe the board president is planning to visit Pittsburgh to find board members from this area.

The continued instability of the Pennsylvania LGBTQ organizing infrastructure is deeply troubling. Without knowing the real story behind the press release, it is still incredibly discouraging that Pennsylvania can't seem to get it together. That's not “a shot” aimed at one particular individual; just a reflection on the general low-priority our community has for infrastructure, period.

I only met Lynn one time for a brief moment so I have no real comment on her departure other than …. here we go again.

Is there significant representation from Western Pennsylvania?
