Equality BannerToday, I am joining with other major blogs to bring more focus to the issue of passing an inclusive ENDA. This is from The Bilerico Project web page:

We’re asking our readers to contact Speaker Nancy Pelosi and ask that she move the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (HR 3017) to a floor vote. Contact info at the end of the article.

The Employment Non-Discrimination Act, first introduced in 1994, would prohibit job discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. But LGBT people have never been able to achieve the enactment of the bill, known by the acronym of “ENDA”.

Last year, the Administration’s highest ranking gay official, Office of Personnel Management Director John Berry, indicated that ENDA was highest priority on the LGBT civil rights agenda.

On one level, the failure to pass ENDA demonstrates the problems in our current leadership in both the House and the Senate, and the failure of Democrats to actually lead the country. On another level, however, it is just one more example of how difficult it is for our country to shed the status quo, and the ability of scare tactics and fear mongering to prevail and dictate policy. It is time for that to change!

We can not expect our government leaders to lead on their own, nor can we just expect national groups to be pushing legislators. The only way we will get legislation like this passed is for every person- gay, lesbian, straight, bisexual, transgender, queer (or however you self-identify) to demand that Washington adopt a comprehensive nondiscrimination policy covering the work place. That legislation is known as ENDA, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

Everyday across our country, there are individuals who face losing their job simply because they are LGBT. Everyday, there are individuals who are not hired because someone assumes they might be LGBT, even if they are not.

The only thing that should impact a person’s ability to get or hold a job, ought to be their ability to do that job! It is time to end this discrimination.

In addition to contact Pelosi’s office, You can contact your PA Representative and ask them to push to bring ENDA to a successful vote.
