Dan Savage has got himself into the midst of controversy again, and you may think he does it just for the controversy, but I think you would be wrong. While his comments can seem way out there, but that is as it should be. The criticism of him revolves around how improper it is for him to say such things.

In a strongly-worded letter on the Catholic League’s website, Donohoe slams Savage as “another anti-Catholic bigot,” before condemning remarks made in conversation with “Real Time” host Bill Maher:

“That’s total bulls***. He’s confusing children of gay parents with children who are raped by Catholic priests. Sorry, I am just done being lectured about children and their safety by Catholic-f***ing bishops, priests, cardinals.” Shortly thereafter, Savage again remarked about “kiddie-f***ing Catholic priests.”

But let’s get real. The Catholic Church has been fighting tooth and nail against same-sex marriage and why? Because they use some archaic text written by men as their only justification supporting their own doctrine. There is no evidence- not even any anecdotal information to suggest that same-sex couples are a harm to anyone. But there is clear and irreversible evidence that thousands of youth have been violated and harmed by priests who have abused their power. And even worse, the Church itself has been complicit in hiding these crimes and protecting the perpetrators.

Savage is just putting it out there like it really is. Not only is he giving voice to the real truth, he is failing to act within the status quo which encourages us to just be quiet.

Organized Religion and some within the Catholic Church are the most vocal opponents to real equality for gay, lesbian, bi, trans, and queer folks. Yet they should have no credibility at all. So Dan puts it out there- he is done being lectured… as we all should be. Savage doesn’t attack Faith or believe, rather he identifies and shines a light on the hypocrisy of humans.

Take direction from Dan Savage and refuse to listen to the BS anymore.  Call out hypocrisy. Pint out the failings of humans and don’t waste time on the belief system! Faith isn’t the problem, rather than the hypocrites who use it as their justification- that’s the real problem and Dan makes that very clear. The truth is often controversial.
