Anytime anyone is talking about “homosexuals” you can be fairly certain that they have an agenda not based in fact or current reality. Homosexuals and homosexuality is something outside their norm. The reality is there are folks who identify as straight, as gay or as bi, and sexual expression is fluid.  In the real world, everyone has a sexual orientation and everyone is a sexual being.  Within this notion of recognizing that everyone is a sexual being and sexual expression is fluid. there is no room for “the homosexual” or “homosexuality.”

One measure that most people are coming to embrace the idea that we are all sexual beings, is the level of lunacy surrounding any discussion of homosexuality. Indeed, there is an inverse and exponential relationship: as more and more people become comfortable with the idea that we are all sexual and sexual expression is fluid, the more insane the arguments against homosexuals become.  Homosexuals can’t be othered and treated as different, when we accept that we are all sexual beings.

Consider this out there fear mongering by the Kentucky Governor’s legal counsel:

Beshear’s counsel — attorney Leigh Gross Latherow — says Kentucky has an interest in maintaining birth rates, which, if allowed to fall, can induce economic crises because of the reduced demand for good and services and the reduction of the work force.

In the brief, Latherow cites recent dips in the economies of Germany and Japan tied to declines in their birth rates, reports the Courier Journal.

“Procreation is vital to the continuation of the human race and only man-woman couples can naturally procreate,” the brief said.

Here are the parts Latherow and Beshear leave out.

Gays and Lesbians have babies too!

Gay and lesbian couples already exist and create families even with out all of the protections afforded by the right to marry. Giving these couples a right to marriage won’t make the birth rate drop. In fact, it could go up instead.

Germany and Japan economies not connected to marriage equality

Here is a story about the change to the Germany economy. In it the reasons cited for a drop in the birth rate have nothing to do with same-sex marriage, and everything to do with larger economic influences, such as a lack of qualified child-care. or this:

Births are falling in China, Japan, the United States, Germany, Italy and nearly all other European countries. Studies have shown that births drop when unemployment rises, such as during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Birth rates have fallen the most in some regions that were hardest hit by the financial crisis.

In other words, Marriage and specifically Same-Sex Marriage have nothing to do with the fall in the birth rates.

The legal brief’s rationale is something like this however. Two men or two women can’t naturally procreate, and therefore there will be fewer babies born. But nothing at all to back up such a claim is presented. Procreation may be vital, but same sex couples don’t inhibit procreation. If the State has an interest in maintaining birth rates (and I’m not entirely certain that it does) it can better serve that end by putting all of the focus on improving there economy, raising wages and providing adequate services to help families.

Still, their fear mongering phrase is this:

Procreation is vital to the continuation of the human race and only man-woman couples…

How many gays and lesbians are there?

We really do’t know how many people identify as gay or lesbian. Some say the number is between 1% and 10% If the entire issue was the need of man-woman couples, that leaves between 90 and 99% of the population to continue having naturally procreating. Even if no gay or lesbian couple ever had a baby, there is no shortage of folks who can procreate and the human race will go on!

I thought I’d add a video clip, one of my favorites from the 1st season of Queer as Folk. Lindsay has just had her baby, and Brian is the father. How about that natural procreation? Hard as they try, no state can come up with any valid reason to stop same sex couples from marrying. There is no reason, and more and more people recognize that ever day turning a blind eye to the fear mongering.
