I received this via email, and the story is at TPM Ryan J. Reilly July 23, 2012, 5:24 PM 300 The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has launched a formal investigation into whether Pennsylvania’s voter ID law discriminates against minorities, TPM has learned. In a letter to Pennsylvania officials on Monday, the Justice Department requested state data on registered voters as well as the state’s list of individuals with driver’s licenses and ID cards. Pennsylvania has said[Read More…]

The PA Voter ID Law is a Queer Issue!

The PA Voter ID Law is a Queer Issue!

The PA Voter ID law will harm LGBTQ Pennsylvanians by the way it will disenfranchise younger voters. …the very direct attack this law has upon our community by the way it impedes trans persons from voting. The person who emailed me didn’t seem to care about trans persons, a position held by too many gays and lesbians. It is difficult to say how many trans men and trans women are effected, as we don’t have any way of counting this part of our community. But this is a real and immediate issue too.

The long range damage of PA’s Voter ID law.

The long range damage of PA’s Voter ID law.

op-ed written by Lucas Michelen, a student at Temple University that I received in an email. It is a clear and straight forward account of the way PA’s Voter ID bill will impact college students who wish to vote in the November 2012 election, and it is a great read, all on its own. Reading it however, prompted me to think about the long range damage this will cause. Many see the importance of the upcoming election as the immediate and short-term impact it will have. What will it mean for our Democracy for the next four years? This is a worthwhile argument, however, the effects go far beyond this election.

ACLU Takes Voter ID Law To Court

The future of Pennsylvania’s recently passed voter ID law may be decided in Commonwealth Court. A lawsuit filed Tuesday by the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania and the NAACP claims the the law, which requires voters to show state issued photo identification at the polls, is unconstitutional. The groups are asking the court to block enforcement of the law before the November election. “We truly believe that if this law is allowed to go[Read More…]

The Voter Suppression Bill: Voter ID will keep me from voting.

The Voter Suppression Bill: Voter ID will keep me from voting.

I have a Pennsylvania issued valid drivers license that will not meet the ID guidelines. I am a legal voter! The Voter ID bill is doing nothing to protect my right to vote! My partner was told that he could use his passport, but why is that? A passport has an expiration date on it but no address at all. Yet, my valid driver’s license won’t suffice? This bill in no way creates protection. Rather it creates hurdles, road blocks, and confusion.

Problems with the PA Voter ID Bill: the issues have only begun.

The ACLU has an interesting blog post about some of the types of real world problems faced by individuals who simply want to be able to vote. Voting, the most basic right granted to us within a democracy. Proponents of the bill say, it doesn’t disenfranchise voters because anyone who needs an ID can go and get a free one at the DMV. Conceptually, that may be true, but in the real practical world, it[Read More…]

Voter ID: reframing the issue.

In otherwords, for me, it isn’t VoterID itself, that I have a problem with- it is the myriad issues that surround it and come about because of the way it is implemented.

Last push to stop discriminatory Voter ID Bill in PA.

The bill as passed in some other states, has been deemed unconstitutional, and full of errors. If Pennsylvania passes the bill, the state can expect lawsuits and a chaotic election season at a time with the voice of the voter is truly needed more than ever.
