Marriage in and of itself, may not be the stumbling block to full equality. Rather, nondiscrimination protections will be the place where gay, lesbian, bi, trans, and queer persons remain treated as second class citizens.
Terence Jeffrey has an op ed on The Patriot Post which is a perfect example of why the anti marriage equality movement continues to lose in court case after court case as well as in the general public opinion poll.
To me, this says that some folks are really nervous about the future of Marriage Equality. While some of us are riding high on a wave on continuously positive judicial rulings, many on the national scene are sweating bullets about how we bring this to completion.
If the State has an interest in maintaining birth rates (and I’m not entirely certain that it does) it can better serve that end by putting all of the focus on improving there economy, raising wages and providing adequate services to help families.
Even if it was not his intent, by writing against Marriage, he is inadvertently writing against Equality, and Benderson shouldn’t be surprised if he faces great and vocal disagreement.
It is conceivable that a judge could rule before the end of May and Same-sex marriage could be legal in the State of Pennsylvania before the start of June. This move was made possible in part because both sides, the ACLU as well as the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania both agreed to allow the judge to rule based only on the briefs files and without a trial.
GetEqual just doesn’t get it, if you ask me. They need to get a clue on their way to Getting Equal. It isn’t that they are wrong in theory. Yes, everyone deserves to be protected from discrimination. But few with any experience in reality, would expect creating public policy by one Supreme Court decision to the plausible step to that end.
The biggest issues facing Obama are not moderate voters in swing states who may be socially conservative. One repercussion of the devastating loses in 2010 helped the GOP redistrict to favor conservatives, and enact across the country, various legislation which oppresses the vote by traditionally democrat voters. Indeed, numbers are way down, especially within the African American community. LGBTQ activists need to lend all their time, talent and funds to GOTV efforts within all traditional Dem voter blocks, even where some of those voters will need to be educated about the need to support LGBTQ issues.
