The link below is to the Daily Kos from last week, and is about a speech she gave, but I think there is another story here to consider. So, Sister Sarah tried to use a play on words, to use the Texas secession issue and morph it into a Texas succession theme. Â But what happened? The crowd was far more enthusiastic about the idea of secession than suceeding. Really. Think about that for a minute. Some people are more enthusiastic about ripping our country apart than being the United States for all.
For any activist working for equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer people, as well as a variety of other progressive issues, this must give them pause. Equality only matters after “we” are clear that “we” are a “we.” Or looked at from the other perspective, secession is all about not being a part of the “we.” So, any dialogue about equal means nothing to those folks. It’s like, talk to the hand (or the gun, to be more accurate). And this mindset  is not limited to Texas- it can be found everywhere to a greater or lesser degree.
If anyone can’t understand why Obama continues to talk about bipartisanship, this is at least a part of it. The need to hold together and strengthen the sense of “united” for without it, there will be no moving forward. In fact without it, we, as a free people are doomed. As drastic as that sounds, I don’t think we are there yet. But it is the direction we are heading if we don’t shift as a country and get our political system truly working for everyone.
