PFOX, is taking advantage of youth to spread their deceptive message of intolerance. They are now trying to get their literature into schools along side info for GSA and GLSEN.
“Questioning children are often encouraged at school to identify as ‘gay’ at an early age; this flyer simply provides an alternative message that students should not prematurely label themselves before they have reached maturity,” said PFOX board member Christopher Doyle.
Their approach is misleading at best and potentially harmful to youth who seek only to create a space where all students, gay and straight are welcome and experience support and respect.
Consider the very nature of the claim, “Questioning children are often encouraged at school to identify as ‘gay’ at an early age.” There is enough in there probably for a few blog posts, let alone the next bombshell, “students should not prematurely label themselves before they have reached maturity.” A host of questions occure:
- Who encourages questiong youth to identify as ‘Gay’?
- What is too early of an age?
- What is the connection between self-identified labels and Sexual Orientation?
- When is ‘maturity reached?
The agenda of groups like PFOX must be called out for what they are: anti-gay and not pro-children. Last night, I was watching the documentary, Out in the Silence which was shown in Beaver Falls PA, followed by a Q/A period. One of the stories discussed in the film, is the story of CJ, a boy who had to leave high school because of the bullying he was experiencing. There was no gay/ straight alliance- no one was encouraging CJ to come out or self-identify as gay, and at one point in the film, he expresses that he wished he had just kept his mouth shut until he had finished high school. He describes how one day, everyone is your friend, and then you say you are gay, and then everyone hates you.
The PFOX agenda is to tell a lie about what gay/straight alliances do and accomplish, and to perpetuate the lie that gay people recruit. And it is real youth, like CJ who are harmed by this malicious message.
In the film, there are also segments of Diane Gramley, the woman who pushes the American Family Association of PA’s message of anti-gay bigotry. Even she acknowledges that how CJ was treated and the lack of support from the School District was wrong, and yet, she won’t support non-discrimination efforts because of “where they might lead,” which for her, is all about same-sex marriage. Her goal, like the PFOX goal, isn’t to get rid of gay people, but to keep them isolated and in the closet, afraid and unable to speak out about their genuine self. Gramley and PFOX seek to protect some idealized picture of the way they think things ought to be at the expense of real people- real youth who suffer and who seek support.
