U. of Pennsylvania Adds Transgender Surgery to Student Insurance Plan
The University of Pennsylvania will begin offering insurance coverage in the fall for sex-change surgeries, according to The Daily Pennsylvanian, joining a group of about 30 other colleges nationwide. Students’ insurance at the university, provided by Aetna, will cover up to $50,000 of the cost of surgery and will also cover psychotherapy and hormone treatment. A student member of the Lambda Alliance, a group that promotes the issues of what it calls “gender and sexual minorities,” told The Daily Pennsylvanianthat the next step would be to extend access to the transgender-surgery coverage to the university’s staff.
