I’ve linked to Micek’s column before and I generally love to read him, but the linked entry has me fairly pissed off. Why is it that “marriage” can be used to talk about a relationship between two guys, but if two guys who are really gay, love each other and want to make a commitment to each other, they can’t.
OK, so I know Micek isn’t making any claim about any candidate’s sexual orientation, and for all I know, Mice may even be pro marriage equality. But it still rubs me the wrong, wrong way that flip comments and catchy phrases are OK in our heterosexist culture, but actually honoring a relationship between two men or two women is way too out there to even talk about, let alone legally acknowledge.
My partner and I have been together for 13 years this week. So which is doing more to destroy the santicity of marriage- our long-lasting relationship, or flip comments designed for lite comedic reading?
Or maybe straight guys are allowed to throw the marriage term around as if it had no real meaning. What’s the old joke, “Take my wife, please”!
And then there’s the arranged marriage between Democrat Dan Onorato and newly minted No. 2 Scott Conklin of Centre County. The two men made their first appearance of the general election campaign together yesterday, holding an event in State College to talk jobs and government reform.
