Having said that, at McDonald’s, there are core values we stand for and the world is getting much closer.
But, you’re right, that commercial won’t show in the United States.
A controversy has erupted or should erupt concerning the McDonald’s corporation and religion-promoted homophobia. An Mc’Donalds ad in France that shows a gay teen and his dad won’t be seen in US TV spots, because the COO of the company is a Christian.
What is most appalling to me is that I haven’t seen anyone question why this ad was created in shown in France. How is it that this large world-wide corporation felt the ad was acceptable in France, but would be unacceptable here. THAT, as far as I’m concerned is the really important underlying question.
I believe the answer is one that few progressives really want to talk about. The Religious Right permeates government and big business in ways far more pervasive than anyone wants to admit. Evangelicals and Catholics don’t hold the same kind of power in France so gays are exploited as a prop to demonstrate inclusivity  by a corporation, which is a real lie. But here, the company fears such a backlash from Evangelicals and Catholics, that the company wants the opposite image.  Here, in the US, McDonalds wants to be seen as Pro-Family .
This US stance isn’t overtly anti-gay. They aren’t saying, “Gays- we don’t want you.” but they are saying that the only “good gay” from a marketing perspective, is an invisible one. We are happy to take your money and use you to promote our image across the globe, but we are going to claim that Christian values are more important than you.
