Eric Ethington wrote a wonderful blog post that is about Utah, but I find inspirational for anyone anywhere working towards the full civil rights of all, including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender persons. I was especially impressed that state-wide, their goal in Utah is to add nondiscrimination protections in 10 municipalities by the end of 2011, and yesterday (in addition to the Prop 8 ruling) marked the 7th with the addition of Taylorsville.
I hope Equality PA is paying attention! These are the types of goals we need to be working towards in Pennsylvania, and through the Value All Families Coalition, we should have adequate reach across the state if that network is being utilized.
Eric pulls one pertinent quote out of Judge Walker’s decision that deserves repeating:
â€The evidence shows conclusively that Proposition 8 enacts, without reason, a private moral view that same-sex couples are inferior to opposite-sex couples.†(pg 135).
If you haven’t seen Judge Vahn Walker’s decision, I linked to it yesterday as published via the LA Times.
On the other hand, them’s fightin’ words, and the anti-gay forces are already charging up to fight harder than ever before.
I also really appreciate Eric’s link of a number of issues and fronts ranging fro Prop 8 to DADT to nondiscrimination. On Facebook, I read a comment yesterday, before Walker’s decision was announced, which suggested that that decision would mean the end of 2nd class citizenship- a truly fallacious idea. Being truly equal participants in Life, Liberty and all things American will take more than a right to get married. All of us, need to keep that in mind, and need to keep working for progress on all fronts where LGBT’s are treated differently than others.

Thx for the comment.
And Utah really HAS BEEN one of the most challenging places in the U.S. to promote and achieve full civil rights. Yet it is being accomplished bit by bit. I agree that Eric's work there is an inspiring model for us in Pennsylvania.
