This is from Truth Wins Out, a blog well worth following. I wrote about Shirvell back on October 2, 2010. It is nice to see how this story has ended (at least for now). Will Shirvell become a darling poster child for the Radical Right who claims religious bigotry?
For me, part of why this story was so startling was that it happened in the midst of the five teen suicides by LGBTQ youth. The aggressive nature of Shirvells actions and words were alarming, and if Chris Armstrong had not been such a strong person, it could have been far worse than it already was. Shirvell’s actions border on (surpass??) stalking, physical intimidated and hate speech, even if his speech is protected, the level of hate and unrelenting nature of it was beyond what real Democracy supports as “Free.” Coupled with the fact that this guy was an attorney, he should have known much better what he could and couldn’t do.
So, this happened:
A Michigan assistant attorney general who started a blog against the University of Michigan’s openly gay student body president has been fired, the state attorney general’s office said Monday.
Michigan Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvell had taken a voluntary leave of absence earlier this fall after his blog garnered national media attention. Shirvell, a graduate of the university, took issue with what he called the student body president’s “radical homosexual agenda.â€

Here is a link to a Truth Wins Out post that explains the whole store too.
