Very interesting story! Not enough to be overjoyed yet, but it is clearly good news at a time with HIV/AIDS cases are on a rise. Interestngly, while I country seems poised to turn back to draconian conservative ways, it was Obama’s lifting of the ban against Stem Cell research that has allowed this type of research to grow and soar n the past few years. I’m not saying he was responsible for this- just that advances like this demonstrate why the ban on research should have been lifted long ago, and we must not allow it to be turned backwards.
Timothy Ray Brown, also known as the “Berlin Patient,” received the transplant in 2007 as part of a lengthy treatment course for leukemia. His doctors recently published a report in the journal Blood affirming that the results of extensive testing “strongly suggest that cure of HIV infection has been achieved.”
While Brown is the first person to ever be declared cured of HIV, his case paves a path for constructing a cure for HIV through genetically-engineered stem cells.
