Colleen Quinn probably thinks she wrote a good article about the move to pass a Transgender Rights bill in Massachusetts. In general, I’d say she did. But why I wonder, do journalists feel the need to perpetuate bull shit?
Opponents of the bill refer to it as the “bathroom bill’’ and assert that it will open the door for transgender people to use opposite sex bathrooms.
Those at the rally said all they are asking for is basic human rights.
Every time a journalist uses this type of language it discredits any attempt to portray the bill as being truly about non-discrimination. “Bathroom Bill” kills real dialogue and understanding every time. Even if the journalist feels it is important to share both the truth as well as the opposition’s position, it can be done without this language.
What is most disappointing about this article however, is how little new information it contains. It is wonderful to see a real person’s story told, so readers can understand her plight and the discrimination she has encountered, but at the same time, the way this is written, it makes her out to be a poor victim rather than focusing on how this legislation would help people like Eva.
Personally, I’d like to see some real journalism! I’d like to see someone investigate and white about why last year’s bill never got out of committee, even though it had such broad support. That would be a story worth reading. Instead, we have one more journalist perpetuating bull shit.
