Others have pointed out over time how the National Organization for Marriage has specifically targeted and baited African Americans in their battle against Marriage Equality. This is rooted in the premise that as a whole African American families may be more active in their churches, and within the Community at large, there is still a greater stigma against being gay or lesbian. This premise may or may not be accurate. Following President Obama’s embrace of Marriage Equality, many individuals as well as National groups have come out in favor of Marriage Equality.
But I can’t help but notice how much NOM continues these efforts unabated. Check out the masthead for their email blasts:
Sure, there are a few non-blacks in the little squares at the top- one of which is Brian Brown of NOM. But what is the point of the main image, a photo that suggests a multigenerational family? Is this about Racial Stereotyping, or is it a far more severe implication about racial engineering and racial purity? Is this a modern day Eugenics effort to maintain racial purity?
With or without Marriage Equality, many states allow for single gay and lesbians to adopt, while a number of states allow same-sex couples to adopt. Often in these adoptions, a person or couple may adopt a child that is racially different from the parent or parents. These are often parents who care most about providing a child with a good and loving home, and the race of the child is irrelevant. This type of family unit has the potential to look very different from the multigenerational image we see above. Is NOM implying that like race heterosexual marriages allow for racial purity from grandparents down to grandchildren? Or is it simply more crass race-bating? Battling against gay adoption, implicitly or explicitly, is simply another form of LGBT discrimination.
Historically, Marriage has never been predominately about a social structure as the Homo-haters present. Historically, women were property of their husbands, and marriage was a way to control heirs to the rest of the property of the husband. Well documented during slavery, slave owners often raped female slaves as their bodies belonged to the slave owner, yet the offspring of these actions were not heirs to any of the owner’s property. The white wife of the husband bore the children and this controlled the distribution of the wealth of the family.
As we move towards the Supreme Court’s hearing of two Same-sex marriage cases, the rhetoric will amplify on both sides, and we can expect to see more anti-gay efforts cloaked in pretty smiles and fallacious arguments as to why the status quo of opposite sex marriages must be maintained at all cost.
