LGBT Field Organizer
The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania (ACLU-PA) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization devoted to protecting civil rights and civil liberties. The ACLU-PA is an affiliate of the national ACLU, the leading defender of civil liberties guaranteed by our nation’s Bill of Rights. The ACLU-PA has offices in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Harrisburg, and a staff of 18 people. It has 20,000 members across the state and an annual budget of $2.5 million.
This position will support efforts to advance recognition of same-sex couples in Pennsylvania. This is a full-time temporary position (six months from the date of hire) with a strong possibility of extension to a long-term position. The position will be based in Philadelphia, although travel around the state will be required.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The LGBT Field Organizer will work under the supervision of the Associate Director and will be responsible for directing the ACLU of Pennsylvania’s public education campaign for statewide recognition of same-sex relationships by:
- Creating and maintaining a coalition of organizations from around the state;
- Recruiting and training volunteers;
- Implementing public education activities around the state;
- Speaking publicly on the issue;
- Outreach to business, faith, and community leaders;
- Collecting stories of couples impacted by the lack of recognition for their relationships;
- Creating fact sheets, content for website, and other public education materials;
- Assisting with creating and implementing a media strategy on the issue; and
- Performing administrative tasks related to the position, such as maintaining a database of relevant contacts.
QUALIFICATIONS
The LGBT Field Organizer should possess the following experience and personal attributes:
- Personally committed to advancing the ACLU’s values, mission, goals and programs, with an understanding of the range of civil rights and civil liberties issues and their implications, particularly LGBT rights.
- Bachelor’s degree, three years of relevant work experience – including campaign experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- A self-starter and finisher with a demonstrated ability to manage details and follow-through with a minimum of direct supervision.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. A willingness and ability to speak in public and to facilitate meetings and trainings.
- Ability to motivate volunteers, build grassroots support, and cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with allies and coalition partners.
- A commitment to diversity.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to keep orderly records.
- Willingness to work occasional irregular hours, including some weekends.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Proficiency with social media, especially Facebook and Twitter
- Ability to travel within the state and a current driver’s license.
- Able to work irregular hours, including some weekends.
- Ability to handle and prioritize multiple activities and responsibilities with strong time management skills and the ability to work under pressure.

Salary based on experience. The ACLU of Pennsylvania provides medical and dental insurance and a generous vacation policy.
