This week, I want to highlight an article posted to Queerty, which I thought was one of the best written articles about HIV and stigma I’ve read in a long time. I’m not sure it could be more on target for 2015, and at the same time, it made me think, maybe we are ready to start talking about sex without fear mongering.
Five Reasons His HIV Status Doesn’t Matter Anymore
Mark King lists five reasons to get your focus and fear off of your sex partner’s HIV status, and they miss nothing. I’ll list their five reasons, but please follow the link for more on each one:
1. What you do in bed is up to you.
2. Someone may be taking PrEP.
3. He is positive and undetectable.
4. HIV isn’t the only game in town.
5. When does his HIV status absolutely matter? When he isn’t dealing with it.
And I especially love this part:
Can you guess what HIV status really does matter? Yours. To stay negative, or keep your HIV virus to yourself, the power is in your hands.
Back in the fall of 2014 I got attacked by a Poz crazy guy for suggesting that we had to start holding ourselves and each other accountable. Yet, that’s exactly what this article is all about. Each of us, it is in our own hands and we can keep ourselves and our partners healthy by knowing our own status and being empowered.
Every one of these five points are worth learning by heart and living by in each and every intimate encounter.
Queerty article has a sub-title for this article: Game Changer. Is this a game changer for you? Why or why not? Leave your comments here on the blog.
