There is quite a bit being written about the current attempts to repeal DADT, but I’m not sure I’m on board with it as if it were a good thing. No one is really talking about what is left in the compromise bill, and most of the dialogue about it skirts by on that key phrase, “repeal DADT.” Most Americans are ready for DADT to be repealed, but most also assume that a repeal of DADT would mean that openly gay or lesbian troops will be allowed to serve. Guess what? The current compromise bill doesn’t accomplish that at all! All the compromise does is repeal DADT, and return the military to the pre-DADT conditions where gays and lesbians were not permitted to serve. The compromise measure contains no non-discrimination protections.

Is the compromise better than nothing? Maybe, but maybe not, and how are we, the general GLBTQ community supposed to really know if no one is really digging in and reporting what the compromise will actually accomplish? HRC and other gay groups are so hungry for any legislation seen as pro-LGBT, that they seem willing to accept something that may not really do any good, but will still give them the fundraising soundbite. We deserve much more.
