Tomorrow is the day, for the eviction of Occupy Pittsburgh. The movement however is so much more than some folks living in tents in a park. In fact, the real success of the entire Occupy movement is that now, Occupy is everywhere! Some talk about this as a transition of the movement, but I’m not aso sure. The movement was from the very beginning all about engaging a larger dialogue about wealth, equity, fairness, and privilege. In that regard, no matter what form the movement has taken, it has been successful to date, and can continue to be if we continue to occupy everywhere we are.

As we learned from the injunction issued against us, the freedom of speech is guaranteed only to those who can afford to purchase it. But we have scored a moral victory. History has shown that when people’s movements respond creatively to repression by the 1%, we can mobilize sympathy for the cause of the 99%. The court even used this as an excuse to rule against us, as if they were doing us a favor: “BNY Mellon’s eviction of the encampment will certainly draw publicity and may even assist in communicating the Occupiers’ message.” On this point, at least, let’s prove the judge right!

The eviction can not stop a movement which is based on the concept that everyone deserves the constitutionally granted rights to free speech and free assembly. The movement can not be stopped, if the basis of this movement remains in our actions, our conversations, and the choices we make every day. In otherwords, when we occupy everywhee, instead of only occupying the camp.

When I speak of occupying everywhere, I do not mean to take anything away from the brave women and men who have sacrificed much to occupy the camp itself. They created the image that will remain burned into  our history, and because of their hard work, we are now able to take that message out from the camp.

I remain convinced that the Occupy Movement is the single most important social justice efforts to be seen in the United States in since the 1960’s. It is a beginning, and the status quo, which the movement battles against is a formidible foe. If there is to be a long term victory, the movement must continue every day in every way.
