A Gay Man Sees “The Gays”

A Gay Man Sees “The Gays”

There is a great need for cultural critique and someone needs to really skewer modern gay male culture. But, “The Gays” neither glorifies Fag overindulgence and self absorption nor adequately indicts it in a way which becomes humorous.

A Gay Man Sees L’Hotel

A Gay Man Sees L’Hotel

Currently running at the Pittsburgh Public Theater, is a world premier comedy by Ed Dixon and directed by Ted Pappas. The price of admission is cheap when you stop and consider the opportunity to be face to face with a whacky variety of great people  ranging from Victor Hugo to Jim Morrison. My husband and I left the theater debating if the show is really a comedy, but if you are looking for laughs, a[Read More…]

the play marks the turning point where Tom’s journey out into the world is inevitable, and outside of this smothering, life sucking and overbearing family, he would begin to explore and find the person who is deep within him.

A Gay Man Sees Walldogs

In a very real way, the performance is about five- or an infinite number of stories- rather than the four listed, and the audience becomes the performers. I marveled at watching the performance viewers become creators, printing and coloring as they enjoyed some food, drink and company

A Gay Man Sees Company!

A Gay Man Sees Company!

The real power of this show for me grows from the fine line it walks between being all that and nothing at the very same time. It isn’t a simple boy meets girl, everyone sings and is happy type of show. It is both fulfilling and leaves you in angst and longing at the same time. In fact, watching, you wonder, if anyone is really happy, till y0u realize everything about how we are as isolated individuals as well as seeking companionship is a search for something.

A gay man sees the film “Blood Brothers.”

On Saturday, I had the chance to see the film Blood Brothers being screened as a part of the Three Rivers Film Festival. The theater was packed and after the film, the director did a Q/A session. The documentary chronicles the the life of Rocky, an American who seeking a purpose in life, ends up caring for Children with AIDS in a rural hostel. My partner had heard an interview with the director and based[Read More…]

A Gay Man Sees Our Town

A Gay Man Sees Our Town

My all-time favorite moment of the show is in the second act where, George announces that he is making up his mind, right then and there to not go away to agricultural college. But this is a show where the dialogue and the story telling are meant to take center stage, so there are many wonderful moments.

A Gay Man Sees Other Desert Cities.

A Gay Man Sees Other Desert Cities.

I left the theater and the first thing that came to my mind was that I had to call my father and tell him that I loved him. That was the very farthest thing from what I thought this show would do for me. But there is was. Indeed, I left the show wondering if politics is just a tool we use to distance ourselves and make ourselves safe from vulnerability? Of course politics is more than that, but is that how we use it?
