A tax burden that might make it impossible for the surviving partner to keep the house. Today, as we are both healthy and alive it is easy to forget that. We can go along with our lives as if a lack of equality doesn’t phase us. But it does. It we want to see change, we must, must, must get more engaged and recognize that it is our government too, and time we actively worked to shape it tomeet our needs.

Many Pennsylvania bills being written by secretive group of corporate lobbyists behind closed doors

American Legislative Exchange Council writes bills and then gives them to PA legislators who pass them off as their own work. The report identifies 23 legislators who are ALEC members, including much of the GOP leadership in the General Assembly. Twenty-two of the 23 are GOP legislators. Only one is a Democrat.

Collective Bargaining: What’s All the Fuss About?

Received this via email today and wanted to pass it along via my blog. As someone who writes mostly about LGBT issues, you might wonder how collective bargaining and LGBT rights are connected. Here are a few points: Collective Bargaining is a method by which individuals, who don’t have an adequate voice as individuals, join together so that as a group, their voice may be heard and their needs understood and met. Is GOP Insanity Hypocritical or Is GOP Hypocrisy Insane?

Now Boner Boy Boehner wasn’t born yesterday, and he has been in the House for a while. It isn’t like the rules about how things are done are secretive or he didn’t have a chance to pay attention to them. I can accept that he feels the House should defend DOMA. I don’t personally agree, but I can intellectually understand how he arrives at that position. and that is one reason we have courts- so that people who see things differently can seek a legal judgement. NOM’s Changing Strategy

NOM must care about the Federal DOMA because once it falls, their attempt to maintain discrimination against same-sex couples will be essentially over. Even now, their battle is futile at best. Enough states support same-sex relationships, but as long as there is no Federal recognition of those relationships, these couples are still second class citizens.

4 Reasons Queers Should Care About the Birthers

Today, I want to lay out 4 very clear reasons why Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Americans need to be alarmed at the Birthers and their influence in our government, and especially the role they will play in the next Presidential race of 2012. In some regard, it isn’t just the Birthers, but the Tea Party more generally, but the Birthers, as a group offer some clearly identifiable issues to consider, and are closely[Read More…]

Gov’t Drops Defense Of Marriage Act Defense

The good news, is we have a president who is now acting like many thought he would to support fairness and equal treatment under the law for all people, including gays and lesbians. The bad news (or maybe it will be good news?) is that same-sex marriage will be a central issue in the next national elections of 2012.
