Last Fall, I had a conversation with my father, who lives in the Ford City/Kittanning area. Over the past 12 tears, we have hobbled together some sort of relationship, that had not existed over most of my adult life. He has known all of the time that I had a partner, Brad, and every once in a while he would ask about him. I thought we had made great progress, and that he was accepting my relationship. But that wasn’t quite true.

As we talked about issues important to me over a dinner, he expressed that he just did what he needed to to block out of his mind any of the stuff about my life. His relationship with me, is about a selective acceptance, and a denial of the big pink elephant in the room.  So much for the building of a real relationship. At 52 years old, I think I’m past needing my family’s approval to be happy, but I found this still hurt more than I would ever have imagined. I’m thinking about sending him a link to this blog entry and thinking about driving up to Kittanning to see if he will go with me to see this film.

Wish me luck!
