In a statement sent to Florida reporters today, Greer completely apologizes to Obama for slamming his 2009 speech. Greer says the vitriol he threw Obama’s way — and the national kerfuffle it caused — was part of his efforts to appease the party’s extremes. (What’s more, Greer suggests that it’s now the GOP that’s promoting ugliness, saying that “many” Republicans “have racist views.”)

If this election season is anything, it definitely is full of surprise and uncertainty. As Primary races have shown, no incumbent is safe from the anti-establishment anger that has been fueled by the Tea Party sentiments of anti-taxes and a return to greater States Rights. This extreme fiscal libertarianism has found a home within the GOP and the extreme social conservatives have seen this movement as the key towards eliminating any moderates from the party. To it’s own demise (maybe?) the GOP has embraced the insanity of birtherism, and other extreme views from these two conservative movements, thinking it could ride that wave back to power. But then what? Will the tail continue to wag the dog, and will genuine conservative values die a quick death to extreme religious and libertarian ideologies?
It is generally believed that even in this era of anti-incumbent anger, Democrats can still keep a lead and continue shifting our government away from the devastating policies that almost destroyed our country. But, only if they get out and vote in big numbers.

I’ve included the quote above, as an illustration of the hyperbole and rhetoric that has been used to stoke the emotional zeal of the extremes that is at the heart of the “power of the tail.” When even some Republicans are starting to try and shift gears away from the extreme, it demonstrates just how far out of control this has become. Democrats and moderates alike can either allow the far right extreme to dominate or they can get out and vote. The choice is ours.
