Alabama: Christian Theocratic State?

I’ve written about this notion of the attempt by some Christian fundamentalists to take control of our government. some refer to it as the American Taliban, and in terms of this incident, Talabama. But all joking aside, everyone who cares about Democracy needs to be uncomfortable with what has happened here in Alabama. The 1st amendment to the constitution guarantees us a Freedom of Religion, and a Freedom from government sanctions/ forced Religion. I do[Read More…]

Hospital Visitation Regulations In Effect

While the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) was very big news, this change that begins today, may be an even more significant step forward for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Americans. I would go so far as to say it is the most important change that could come about  (next to the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). “There are few moments in our lives that call for greater compassion and[Read More…]

The True Purpose of the Family

Pope Benedict XVI, who confused many followers recently by suggesting condoms might be acceptable for prostitutes, but not for HIV protection in general, last week said that gay marriage penalizes traditional couples and distorts the true nature of the family. The Pope said, “forms of unions, which distort the essence and purpose of the family end up penalising those who, with much effort, commit themselves to living a life whose bonds are marked by stable[Read More…]

The Choice to be Gay

Anne Hathaway to Play Kurt’s Gay Aunt on ‘Glee’! Generally speaking when someone suggests that it is a choice to be gay, I am quick to disagree and defend that people are born with their sexual orientation intact, but for one group of folks, being gay is a choice- straight actors. Anne Hathaway was on Jimmy Fallon last month were she told him, “Can I make a confession? In my head, I’ve written a part[Read More…]

Urgent: Action Needed to Stop Repeal of HCR

The GOP is moving forward with an attempt to repeal Health Care Reform even though it will increase the deficit, and return thousands and thousands of people to the status of un-insured. Yhje uninsured drive up health care costs for everyone, and this repeal serves no purpose except to be a battle against the current president. Americans deserve more than a GOP pissing match to see who is the toughest, especially when it is at[Read More…]

Out in the Silence Tops Top

Out in the Silence Tops Top

So, often with LGBT issues, the idea of activism is carrying signs and shouting for rights. And that may be a part of activism. But a different approach is also needed, and is displayed so powerfully here.

Martin Luther King Jr

“When evil men plot, good men must plan.  When evil men burn and bomb, good men must build and bind. When evil men shout ugly words of hatred, good men must commit themselves to the glories of love.”

Same-sex marriage Doesn’t Liberate All

If the anti-gay groups really want to see what same-sex marriage has done to families and the institution of marriage, they only need to look at Canada, which is celebrating 10 years of gay marriage. Families haven’t dis-intigrated, straight marriages still thrive, and the world hasn’t come to an end. I appluad all those couples who set the stage for the fight for all of the rest of us to be able to enjoy marriage[Read More…]

Why the Sexual Orientation of Daniel Hernandez Matters

His sexual orientation becomes important when the generic image of “gay” put out there for the average news consumer, is negative, and when folks are allowed to think they don’t know of any gay people, or know of any gay people who don’t fit the negative stereotypical hate stuff. But if the positive folks aren’t identified and celebrated at the time, then when will this become known? It is like making sure that these facts get entered into history, while history is being written.
