It is one thing to pass laws that discriminate against gay, lesbian, bisexual, or trans persons. That is obnoxious, but legislative bodies can do that. It is a whole other thing for Republicans at the state-level to pass legislation that stops people in cities and counties from making their own choices about equality and fairness. It is un-American and anti-democratic. It’s the GOP’s new strategy working here in Tennessee and also their tactic in Michigan.

After a testy debate in which Democrats accused Republicans of homophobia, the state House voted overwhelmingly Monday night to nullify Nashville’s new anti-gay bias ordinance and to ban any such laws in the future in any other Tennessee city. (emphasis is mine)
