Pittsburgh Lesbian Correspondents is right on the money in her recent post slamming James Harrison for his non-apology. While Sue and I sometimes see things differently, her post is a perfect example of one of the things Sue does so well- call people out on their crap. In this case, it is questionable, who is spreading the most manure- the agent or the player, but clearly both need an education. Her post is a very good read.

There is one point where I might be inclined t agree with Harrison. Just because he acts and speaks so ignorantly, doesn’t “make him a homophobic bigot.” He may not be either homophobic or a bigot, but he certainly is clueless as to the meaning and power of some words.

Kerr rightly focuses in o the acceptance of such language in professional sports (although I think we will find this derogatory language like this used at all levels of sorts from grade school and up). There has been far too long, a willingness within sports to display this type of behavior, and finally, players are being called out for it. This must continue- the calling out of athletes who act similarly.

Here is where the rest of the Pittsburgh LGBTQ community- at least those who love the Steelers need to get engaged. It is time for your voices to be heard. It is time for you to speak out and say that the team your root for should not tolerate or condone such behavior.

If it is true that Harrison isn’t a homophobic bigot, he will learn how damaging this type of behavior is, and he will stop doing it. Homophobic bigots are those individuals who refuse to learn and/or who continue to act in such manners specifically because it is damaging. Let’s look forward to his speedy education so we, as sports fans ca go back to loving the Steelers as ball players.
