America is at a crucial crossroads. It is not going to be enough to merely replace Barack Obama next year. We are in critical need of the innovative, forward-looking strategy and positive leadership that Gingrich has shown he is capable of providing.
He did so with the Contract with America. He did it in bringing in the first Republican House in 40 years and by forging balanced budgets and even a surplus despite the political challenge of dealing with a Democratic President. A lot of candidates say they’re going to improve Washington. Newt Gingrich has actually done that, and in this race he offers the best shot of doing it again.

Redstate blog has a post about the largest New Hampshire newspaper endorsing Newt Gingrich. I’m somewhat surprised, as that blog has been firmly behind Rick Perry. Perhaps they are for anyone who isn’t Romney.

The quote above is actually from the Union Leader endorsement, and it captures a sentiment that anyone who cares about any progressive issue has to really come to terms with. And especially, anyone who cares about the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer- this is a message we have to grasp quickly and completely. The battle we are fighting, isn’t just about LGBTQ rights, but rather we are in the thickest part of the culture war and the result will either be moving forward, or stepping back far into the past. Modernity may seem like the wrong word, but if you look at the GOP agenda, it is very much about bringing back the Dark Ages where women have no choice over their own bodies and theocracy rules.

I don’t think that this is only about Gingrich- the whole of the GOP, but Gingrich offers perhaps the best illustration of what we are facing.

Gingrich says he is for gay rights, but he is opposed to same-sex marriage. This is an indication of the way irrationality and a return to the Dark Ages is ruling things. The attempt to “save” marriage is al about protecting some religious concept and nothing to do with the reality of real relationships. And to believe he is for gay rights and doesn’t see the right to protect our loved ones as a part of that is ludicrous.

The Huffington Post captured by Truth Wins Out puts it this way:

Really, is this how far the GOP has sunk? The professed party of “family values” backs a serial adulterer who left one of his revolving wives while she was in the hospital recuperating from cancer. What, exactly, is “conservative” about a man who behaves in such a tawdry manner that lacks even a scintilla of personal responsibility?

The only way to grasp the incongruity- what TWO calls a “fake” conservatism, is to see it in a pre-modern mindset where men make all the rules and do whatever they want.

We- in the most generic sense- are so close to an end to the culture wars, and now is the time for those who are opposed to Equality for all (even if they think they are in favor of Gay Rights) to pick up their battle. We are close to their last ability to turn things around, and if they succeed, it will be swift and complete. If we do not want to see a pre-modern theocracy here in America, we must all work together to keep the GOP from gaining any more ground.
