We have known for a while that the Republicans in WAshington DC have been after Obama and their entire purpose has been to make him a single term president. GOP efforts in the states has been geared heavily towards promoting a conservative social agenda such as the efforts to take away women’s reproductive rights. Here in Pennsylvania, the efforts go both ways however. Corbett announced as far back as 2010 his intention to suppress the vote in Philadelphia area, and PA HB 934 is his effort toward that end.

The GOP portray Voter ID bills as if they are about protecting the voting process from fraud, so on the surface, this sounds like a good thing, however when you get down to the real details, Voter ID bills are a remedy for a problem that doesn’t exist. There is no evidence of voter fraud to the degree that such a huge and costly effort is needed to solve the problem. In fact current law is sufficient for protecting against it or prosecuting and infraction.

But Corbett was quite straight forward about it in 2010. He wants to keep from receiving 50% of the vote in the Philadelphia area.  “Keep it down” was his words for the goal. The Voter ID bill meets that end, especially in poor, the elderly, and urban communities where not everyone has a car.
