The linked story is at Pam’s House Blend and deals specifically with a Louisiana bill, but it has ramifications for Pennsylvania, as we debate school vouchers and the rise in charter schools. So check out the whole post.

It isn’t that vouchers are theoretically bad. The basic premise sounds as if it is a good thing, and the same holds true for charter schools. There is nothing about them in general which should be al that suspect. The problem comes when these schools operate outside of the laws and policies that cover the broader Education environment. When these schools are considered as if they are “public” instead of private yet they are immune ti the laws, restrictions, standardizations and policies for real public schools, they can become spaces where discrimination is accepted and the norm. When the State allows public money through school vouchers to fund charter schools, we, the tax payers are supporting discrimination.

But, New Orleans state Sen. Ed Murray questions that. He fears the bill could open the door to state funded, but independently run charter schools denying admission based on sexual orientation, a student’s ability to speak English or a child’s athletic ability.
