Blogger’s note: The President of the Staff Association Council, Deborah Walker felt that my wording here didn’t represent her  comments correctly, therefor, I have changed the work “functioning” to “meeting” which is the word she used in her communication to me. This was poor judgement on my part. I would ask however, how there is a real difference between the two. The committee can only function by meeting, discussion, and putting things forth. If the committee is not meeting, I do not know how it is otherwise functioning, but I respect her desire to have the words more accurately portray her.

In my first post, I stated two tasks to accomplish, and in the few hours since I posted, there has been progress on both. But, I want to start with the second, which was to get the Staff Association Council’s committee for diversity and Inclusion active. I contacted the SAC President, and was told that the committee was not functioning because there was no chair. Well, now there is going to be a chair. Me. So that is one task done. Now the next thing is to get the committee meeting and doing good work.

I also mentioned emailing a colleague who I felt could put me in touch with the right people to talk to. I heard back from that person as well, and we will be meeting as soon as we can. I’d love to print some of the stuff in the email I received, but that is premature. I’ll wait till after we meet. But the point that I want to make is that more can happen when people are willing to talk to one another. There are times when this doesn’t happen: one party refuses to talk, or the other party is all about making demands rather than talk. There are real times for loud demands too. But underneath all of it, is a need for people to talk and change what needs to be changed, once it is understood what that may be.
