Those who seek to discriminate against trans persons never cease to amaze me, and this
time, it seems to me that they can not read. Or comprehend what they read? Emphasis is mine:
The student does not need a doctor’s or parent’s note or anything else other than their own statement that they are the opposite sex that they appear to be. The document reads:
“The responsibility for determining a student’s gender identity rests with the student. A school should accept a student’s assertion of his or her gender identity when there is … ‘evidence that the gender-related identity is sincerely held as part of a person’s core identity.’”
Therefore, any boy from kindergarten to high school senior has the right to say that he is now a girl and he will be given access to the girl’s bathrooms and locker rooms.
This law is pretty clear- there must be evidence that the gender-related identity is sincerely held as a part of a person’s core identity. This does not allow any boy to just decide he is now a girl. The very notion of that is just insane.
Additionally, I love how the Far Right crazies, always think this is about boys being girls. In reality trans individuals may self-identify as male or as female. But fear mongering works better with the specter of a male pretending to be a girl. WTF!
Stupidity around gender is not left only to the Far Right. In this Massachusetts case, a Democrat lawmaker is introducing a measure to retire the student identify based on her or his anatomy. This is precisely the wrong way to go and demonstrates the most ignorance. It is almost as insane as thinking little boys will march into school and just say they are girls.
What’s worse too, is that the major LGBTQ organizations don’t talk about trans issues much. Marriage Equality- repealing DOMA- these issues get major airtime. But the harm done to our queer youth who are simply trying to be real in their gender identity… Not so much.
