New Voices Pittsburgh has been a dynamic organization making real progress at grass roots organizing efforts within communities of color especially around issues like reproductive rights but LGBTQ issues as well. They are now accepting applications for a leadership institute to help train emerging leaders. From their press release:

New Voices Pittsburgh LGBTQ Leadership Institute (NVLLI)

New Voices Pittsburgh is dedicated to building powerful and transformative leadership in our community. We will be offering our first New Voices LGBTQ Leadership Institute for LGBTQ people of color, taking place on Wednesdays March 25 – April 29, 2015.

The NVLLI will support ten (10) LGBTQ activists of color working for LGBTQ liberation and Reproductive Justice to begin or advance their work by building strong community relationships, expanding their professional network and offering leadership development, community organizing and policy advocacy training.

Over five (5) sessions, NVLLI participants will develop skills and a community of practice committed to continuous learning and using innovative strategies to dismantle systems of oppression that limit sexual, gender and reproductive freedom.

Participants will become grounded in a working knowledge of the Human Rights and Reproductive Justice framework while examining the intersections of self-determination in the LGBTQ liberation, Racial Justice and Gender Justice movements.

The goal of the New Voices LGBTQ Leadership Institute is to create a local and statewide pipeline of leadership for LGBTQ people of color community to win policy change and inspire culture change that ends homophobia and transphobia.

To apply, you must identify as a LGBTQ person of color, be age 18 and complete the application by Wednesday, March 18, 2015. This is no cost to participate in this program. If you have any questions, please contact Carmen Alexander, Community Organizer, LGBTQ@newvoicespittsburgh.org.

In ways similar to the exciting efforts of the Initiative for Transgender Leadership, New Voices Pittsburgh is focusing on training emerging leaders and providing them with the skills needed to become engaged in social change efforts. Because of efforts like this, New Voices Pittsburgh remains an effective leader in Western PA and beyond because of the tangible results of their efforts.
