American Legislative Exchange Council writes bills and then gives them to PA legislators who pass them off as their own work. The report identifies 23 legislators who are ALEC members, including much of the GOP leadership in the General Assembly. Twenty-two of the 23 are GOP legislators. Only one is a Democrat.

As much as Brooks attempts to convince those on his side, we, on our side need to also remember to let go of the fantasy of one ultimate battle that will allow good to prevail over all else. Democracy is messy business partly so that the rights of even the minority are trampled as little as possible , and all side have some way to make some progress.

We are the Civil rights struggle for today, demanding nothing less that full equality, and our place within the fabric of the American Culture. And our struggle will not end under that has been achieved.
Every time a journalist uses this type of language it discredits any attempt to portray the bill as being truly about non-discrimination. “Bathroom Bill” kills real dialogue and understanding every time. Even if the journalist feels it is important to share both the truth as well as the opposition’s position, it can be done without this language.
If activists truly care about full equality, then we must take responsibility for keeping the focus on full equality. Consider Canada, which has had Marriage Equality for 10 years, but a Trans person can still be fired or refused housing. We, as activists, especially highly vocal ones, do the whole of our community a disservice by being too overly focused on only one aspect of full equality.
