I’m speaking today at Podcamp Pittsburgh about the Activist Blog.
Westboro Baptist Church will be in the Western PA area in a few weeks and there is discussion about what to do in response. What Would Lady GaGa Do?
I think this is possibly a major core of the difference between being an activist who is fighting against someone or someone, and an advocate who is working for something, and willing to see a bigger picture.
This seems connected/ similar to Sharron Angle, who is running against Harry Reid in Nevada. Angle, is suggesting that if Republicans aren’t elected in a majority to take back control of the country, that Tea Party activists (and others??) ought to take up guns and use them to force a coup in Washington.
The degree to which the very Constitution, or at least what it means is at stake, should give anyone from the progressive left to the vast moderate middle a pause, and then help them hurry to the ballot box to protect the very foundation of the country. Or it may be too late.
Direct Action is a powerful tool for political change, however often misunderstood. It may include marching and being at a protest rally, but it is far more than that. In fact, just showing up at a rally will cause little positive change in and of itself. Direct Action, especially of the type that would be called Civil Disobedience is far more of an investment in the movement that carrying a sign and shouting slogans.
While Rep. Carney is out on the campaign trail worried about his own job, he continues to leave his LGBT constituents unprotected and without any form of federal employment protections. Like all Americans, we are worried about our job security and Rep. Carney’s votes based on discrimination are completely unacceptable.
No matter how passionate you are about Marriage Equality, it is in your best interest to understand the nuances of Walker’s decision, and what the next steps may mean. It could mean the difference between an end to Prop 8 for California, or a cornerstone for the foundation of the case that will allow Same- Sex Marriage across the entire country.
The other option is for everyone to accept that there are two parts to marriage. There is the legal part, and a ritual/religious part. Gays and Lesbians are seeking equality in terms of the first- the legal or civil marriage. It’s not that some same-sex couples don’t want the whole church wedding, because some do, but that we aren’t demanding that every church honor same-sex weddings. So any of those churches who do celebrate same-sex marriage- that’s great, and for those that don’t, no big deal.
Yet, my experience also shows me how successful the anti-gay forces have been in their attempt to define being gay as a choice and a lifestyle. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter what laws we pass- as long as enough people buy into that falsehood, the future for LGBT equality will be a rocky one.
