All people are born with a sexual orientation that is towards member of the same sex, towards members of the opposite sex, or towards both. For many persons, they accept a sexual identity consistent with social norms. Some persons are aware that this identity doesn’t fit them, and they seek an identity more aligned to their orientation.
On Friday, a press release was posted regarding the City’s review of allegations of police misconduct at this year’s Pittsburgh Pride. Today I want to comment on two aspects of the overall story,
A greater awareness and appreciation of this diversity within the Trans* community is needed especially by the umbrella LGBTQ community, where some have expressed a desire to break Trans issues apart of the larger issue of Equality. Gays and Lesbians must before it is too late grasp how their own efforts isolate and antagonize the inclusion of Trans* persons.
In regards to Wayne’s letter, free speech entitles people to say really stupid stuff sometimes. But when this is all they have, it is clear that the future for gay, lesbian bi, trans and queer people is getting better by the day.
Today, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto announced the selection of Cameron McLay as the next Chief of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police. McLay is a leadership development consultant for the International Association of Chiefs of Police, instructing in dispersed ethical leadership, and a former Captain of Police with the Madison, Wis., Police Department. Let’s hope that any vacation from active work for Steel City Stonewall Democrats will end soon, as the group can be an essential player in helping to grow the voice of LGBTQ and allied voters here in Western PA. Or, let’s hope that the group gets new leadership who will focus on doing whatever it takes to not be an “account suspended” type of presence.
In other words, the State of Indiana must control marriage, because if they didn’t, heterosexuals will have sex and make babies by mistake. Since same-sex couples don’t make babies by mistake, they don’t need to get married?
Could someone please cite what marriage equality activist ever insisted marriage wouldn’t affect anyone? Because it never happened! No one ever suggested such a thing! What marriage equality activists said then and now, is that allowing same-sex couples the ability to protect their relationships as and their families with civil marriage wouldn’t harm any heterosexual marriage. That’s a really big difference.
Should efforts and resources be spent towards getting marriage equality accepted at the ballot box? Do you think there will be repercussions in the form of more restrictive legislation following a Supreme Court win similar to what happened following Roe v Wade?
I so often hear people talk about LA or NYC- as if in those places gays and lesbians live all that differently than they do where I live, Pittsburgh PA. Yet where I am is light years ahead in terms of LGBTQ rights compared to some other locales. But LGBTQ rights, aren’t some esoteric mind thing, but real lives, real people and real families, loved ones and friends.
