Missing from any discussion of the the boycott seems to be mention of why a boycott is being discussed. Ultimately, the goal is to help gay, lesbian, bi, trans, and queer people, especially youth in Russia.
Real mission work is not at stake here, nor will it be harmed by this court case. What will be impacted however, is the way some power brokers charade their attacks on groups of people as if it were simple biblical teaching, and possibly that can be stopped by this case.
I want to address first, the fallacy that Johnny Weir and Blake Skjellerup have any business thinking their idea means much just because they are Olympic athletes. If Blake would choose to remain in the closet out of financial considerations, why would he think that having one’s life placed in danger is not a reason to put a halt to the Olympics being held in Russia? They would do better to pressure the IOC to move the Games to a safer place.
If YOU feel it is against YOUR religious beliefs for two same-sex people to marry, then no one will force YOU to marry a person of the same-sex! But don’t force your theology upon my partner and I who are a loving and committed couple. My Civil Marriage won’t strop you getting into heaven!
Gagnon’s name surfaced yet again in a Google alert for “Homosexual.” The linked post is the start of a review of something Gagnon wrote which is supposed to be a secular justification against homosexuality. What does the Biblical Scholar have to bring to a secular argument to oppose gay people? And as I read, not only the commentary of Gagnon’s writing, but Gagnon’s text itself, that nagging question returned. Is Robert Gagnon gay?
Late last year the Associated Press (AP) Style Guide, made the decision to ban the use of the word, homophobia as imprecise, yet when it comes to Antonin Scalia, the word is right on the mark as expressed here in this recent quote:
While this battle isn’t really about us, here we are right in the middle of it, and truly fighting for our lives and for our equality, and we better keep fighting hard, even if it isn’t about us. But I think this distinction is crucial, because it means that even if the abuses against us are done with the intention of harming us personally, we don’t have to take it personally. For example, it isn’t about me, Thomas Waters. It is about some group of folks trying to force their rigid ideas upon everyone else. If I don’t take it personally, I don’t need to defend myself, and who I am. I don’t have to prove that I have a right to be. I can focus all my energy into fighting for Equality, because everyone deserves to be treated equally.

Chris Brown slams gay rumors as ‘lies’: Is Raz B homophobic? The LGBTQ community should not be silent on this, and the point isn’t about Chris Brown’s sexual orientation. Rather, we can not let anyone slam gay people in general by suggesting a link between violence against women and sexual orientation.

Lou is an old-time antyi-gay crazy, listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
