I saw this reported on Pam’s House Blend, although the quote and link below are to original sources. OTTAWA — The House of Commons passed a bill Wednesday that will amend the Canadian Human Rights Act and Criminal Code to protect transgender and transsexual Canadians from discrimination. “It’s a great day,” said the bill’s author, NDP MP Bill Siksay. “It’s been in the works for six years, and it’s great to see people from all[Read More…]

How “Gay Rights” Activists Harm the Future of Equality

We must quit talking about Gay Rights as if it is an all inclusive term. Pittsburgh Celebrates a Full Weekend of Transgender Visibility

A greater awareness and appreciation of this diversity within the Trans* community is needed especially by the umbrella LGBTQ community, where some have expressed a desire to break Trans issues apart of the larger issue of Equality. I support the Transgender Lobby Day.

In the end, gay, lesbian, bi, trans, and queer persons are all persons who are gender non-conforming in one way, shape or form. Any homophobia, discrimination and othering happen because LGBTQ persons choose to risk being visible as the whole persons that we are. Consider how many gays and lesbians have always been out there, and no one cares as long as we stay hidden in the closet. Our “crime” as it were- the thing that prompts our oppressors is our visibility and in that way, we are all alike, no matter how we understand our sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression.

This is a moment when the LGBTQ Rights Movement Changes.

This is a moment when the LGBTQ Rights Movement Changes.

You could say, that now we await the decisions, but I’d like to suggest that we do more than simply wait. Use this time to relish the importance of this milestone and this moment! And use this time to prepare for how we move forward, demanding full equality for all LGBTQ persons. Some feel that the inordinate focus on Marriage has eclipsed the needs for other rights for gay, lesbian, bi, trans, and queer people. It is up to us to make sure that no one is left behind and that freedom for all, includes ALL.
