Does Dee’s Discriminate?
A bartender at Dee’s Cafe in Pittsburgh’s South Side refused to serve several women because she believed they were lesbian. This is in violation of the City Human Relations Ordinance.

The good news, is we have a president who is now acting like many thought he would to support fairness and equal treatment under the law for all people, including gays and lesbians. The bad news (or maybe it will be good news?) is that same-sex marriage will be a central issue in the next national elections of 2012.
This is making the rounds under the title, “Santorum has a Google Problem,” but I don’t think that is really accurate. Rick “Man on Dog” Santorum, has a problem because he can’t escape his past as he now tries to set himself up for a run for President. Mr Man-on-dog himself, calls it a Google problem, because if you Google Santorum, the first hits are not what he wishes they were, but in reality, they[Read More…]
I took this from Facebook, but it came from Twitter: RT @SenGillibrand Outrageous that instead of wkg to create jobs, House GOP voted to slash funding of #PlannedParenthood, threatening lives of women & girls. Last night, I had a young guy try to school me about conservatives and the Tea Party. According to him, the Tea Party doesn’t care about social issues, like gay rights or women’s rights. The solution is to ignore the intimidation and refuse to be silenced. The more we are out and visible, the harder it is for our opposition to accomplish their goals to silence us and deter equality. The more we share who we are as individuals, as couples, and as families or as supportive allies, our collective voice will drown out the hatred, lies and misinformation.
Lauren Daley has a short but immensely important piece in the City Paper- an interview with Judith “Jack” Halberstam who will be in Pittsburgh as a Short Term Fellow. Daley’s piece is a very good read, so check it out, but this question was especially interesting: How do we bridge the gap between LGBT communities that are so varied? There has to be a different kind of politics. It’s not going to be an “identity politics”[Read More…]
So, often with LGBT issues, the idea of activism is carrying signs and shouting for rights. And that may be a part of activism. But a different approach is also needed, and is displayed so powerfully here.
Equality PA, the ACLU, and the Human Rights Campaign has been co-sponsoring a series of town hall events across Pennsylvania following the election last November. Two such events are slated for Western PA in the coming weeks. Ted Martin, the executive director of EQPA was a guest on my BlogTalk Radio program last week, and he talked about the purpose of the town halls, especially given the climate in Harrisburg, now that the Republicans control[Read More…]
