I’ve been online for the past 40 minutes awaiting the ruling regarding same-sex marriage in Pennsylvania and a little over six minutes ago, Twitter lit up with announcements that the judge had ruled Pennsylvania’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional. AS of this moment, there has been no stay requested or granted, suggesting that marriage licenses may be available very soon. We take some comfort in believing that we hold the ability to control when and to whom we are going to come out. But when something public, like this now famous kiss happens, the tables are turned, and we have lost a little bit of that control and the fears are more evident.
If Equality really is to mean that everyone is treated fairly and without discrimination regardless of the sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, then we must quit promoting the false dichotomy which pretends that people are either straight or gay, and referring the whole of our community by including the “Q” is a big step in that direction.
